frequently asked questions
What is the difference between speech therapy and behavioural therapy?
Speech therapy and behavioural therapy are different disciplines that are sometimes confused. Speech therapy (speech-language pathology) focuses on communication — helping with speech, language, articulation, voice, fluency, and swallowing. Behavioural therapy focuses on modifying behaviours and developing social, emotional, and coping skills, often used in conditions such as autism or ADHD. The two can complement each other, but they address different needs. Our speech-language pathologists focus specifically on communication and language.
Are all speech therapists experts in Dysphagia?
No. While swallowing (deglutition) falls within the scope of speech-language pathology, not every speech therapist specialises in swallowing disorders (dysphagia). Managing swallowing difficulties — particularly after a stroke or in neurological conditions — requires specific training and experience. When swallowing care is needed, it’s important to work with a speech therapist experienced in dysphagia. Our team can advise on the right expertise for your needs.
What is the difference between an SLP and an SLT?
There is no real difference — SLP and SLT refer to the same profession, just with different terminology used in different regions. SLP stands for Speech-Language Pathologist (the term used in North America, including Canada and the US), while SLT stands for Speech and Language Therapist (the term used in the UK and many other countries). Both are qualified professionals who assess and treat speech, language, communication, and swallowing disorders.
